If you at some point executed a "Edit Form Markup" on your data type and saved that, there will be a custom form definition below the folder ~/App_Data/Composite/CustomFormDefinitions which is used - delete that file and control returns to the designer.

I guess we should display some warning or similar in the designer when this is the case - a tricky one to find.
