Yes, renaming the folder without dots did the trick - the backup works now.
Did you think about my other questions?
What is the scope of the problem? Are there any other Add-On modules affected by dots in their paths?
If this affects only the XmlBasedSiteBackup perhaps it occurs rarely and nothing further need be done.
But if several C1 add-ons are likely to be affected, would it be helpful to add a note to the Composite C1 Requirements specification page at http://docs.composite.net/Getting-started/System-Requirements , warning users that URLScan and AllowDotInPath=0 can cause a 404 page not found problem ? After all it already states the Full-Trust hosting requirement.
As you can see from my own experience (and the Wordpress example you gave) this can be an extremely difficult and time-wasting problem to trace.
