I'd say that the original feature request is solved to the letter - it is now possible, via the admin UI, to set the field(s) by which data is ordered in trees, without writing your own data provider or tree definition. Actually I can't see what could have been improved in that respect - this is hardly "a fix", but baked right into the system in tune with the existing code body.
I'm guessing you saw this feature request as also embodying a mechanism for _re_-ordering data elements via something like drag-and-drop or copy-paste - please do add such a feature request and include any thoughts you may have on what role (if any) multiple levels of grouping folders should play here (like dropping an element from one date folder to another would update the date field etc.).
A smarter way to order things than fiddle with an int in a text box is definitely a good idea. Here your contrib is a great alternative and the feature here that just got implemented and your contrib should work very well together I would believe.
In general, if you have feature ideas that are so good you feel they will be voted all the way to the top, please do suggest them. Those are obviously the most interesting ones :)
